The Old Pecan Street Association is dropping its “Old” designation in line with an organizational restructuring, to become known as The Pecan Street Association (“PSA”). PSA’s major endeavor, the Old Pecan Street Festival (“PSF”) will no longer be referred to as “Old” either. The PSF is one of the largest, and longest-running, arts/crafts and music festivals in the nation. PSF is currently implementing a new agenda for community outreach, which includes a new marketing/public relations team and an upgraded online presence to reflect this forward-thinking shift.

PSA continues its work to preserve the Sixth Street Historic District, while working to improve it and Austin as a whole. One project in line with this effort is our Historic Plaques Project, highlighting historic buildings and structures in the district. PSA contributes festival proceeds to local non-profit organizations and the City of Austin in an effort to stay aligned with its original mission of giving back to this amazing communityPSA recently consulted with Greenlights for Nonprofit Success and is embarking on several structural changes, including the hiring of an executive director.

PSA has until now, been run administratively by the board president; currently, Shannon Sedwick, owner of the renowned Austin institution, Esther’s Follies. The new Executive Director is Debbie Russell, who, in addition to her long-standing work with the producers of the PSF (brought in originally to “green” the festival), brings years of organizing and non-profit administrative experience to the role.  She will manage PSA and act as a liaison between it and Special Events Management (“SEM”), producers of the PSF.

Also recently partnered with PSF/PSA is Peachy, Inc. headed by Weston McGowen. Peachy’s goal is “to assist PSA in increasing attendance, heighten public awareness and enlist active community support for the PSF as a place to showcase our community’s artiss, passion-based organizations and small businesses.”PSF has some new changes for the 37th Annual Spring festival, all of which will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Pecan Street Association is now accepting applications for the 2015 Heritage Award; The Pecan Street Association will honor a distinguished individual whose work demonstrates a commitment to excellence in historic preservation, particularly focused on the Sixth Street Historic District.
